My Sentiments really. Patience. My earliest lyrical memory. But now, one by one as I go forward. I will try my best to add one shoot a day for the next few at least. This was called 'Ghost' and is a photographic eulogy inspired by my favourite songwriter (one of two) Jeff Mangum. It was published by NAAG. Agyness Deyn and Fiona Byrne's New York based online Mag. It's a really cool mag. Thank you to them for liking the story.

This post is quite hard for me. Maybe my lack of putting up new pictures has had something to do with worrying about my Grandfather over the last 5 or so months. Those who met him would agree that he was indeed a legend. He was not just a relation, he was a true friend and has taught me and made me everything that I am. Go well friend and thank you. My heart goes out to my grandmother today who after 72 years of marriage is alone. You are both incredibly special people who loved and lived life to the full.

Last week, I was asked to shoot some new stuff for Die Antwoord. We shot the day after their new music video was being shot by Trevor Clarence. It was an amazing experience working with them. We shot in and around a few houses close to Brixton. The music video and their new look website launches tomorrow and they leave today for LA and New York to discuss the future. More about the shoot after the site launches tomorrow but in the meantime here is a pic of Ninja backstage after their show at The Alexander Theatre. So, it's nearly that time where we've finally got ourselves a new site for Injozi. This is the image that I shot with all of us cast as Carnivale folk. Boss Models Exhibition

Stylist Caroline Olavarrieta and myself were asked to come up with a concept for an Editorial for Design Indaba magazine for their Protofarm issue. This was a take on apartment spaces and the people in them in a state of solitude in 2050. I think the mag has just come out now.

Anglo Noir Shoot

Anglo Gold runs a design competition once a year called 'Auditions' in which designers can create gold showpieces. Dion Chang had outlined a number of characters on which the jewellery would be based and once the short-list of finalists were narrowed down, we were approached by Breinstorm and asked to shoot character shots in a Noir-style for a catalogue. Gabrielle De Gersigny (stylist) and I worked together with Breinstorm to create a story in a Noir style and these are a few of them. It was an amazing project to work on and everyone did an amazing job to pull it off. Bye.

So, it's been a while. So, hello again if there is anyone still out there? The next few posts are gonna be a little bit about the commercial stuff i've been busy with since my last post. I've done some campaigns for Allan Gray (which were shot on film again which was really cool), Bells, Anglo Gold, The Eagle Awards, A Boss Models exhibition that I took part in and some images from a Design Indaba Magazine editorial that has just been finished. It's just come out, so check it out.

I've just been away for a few weeks with my assistant Douglas and started some work on a personal project that I've been wanting to do for a long time. More of that as it progresses.

But in the meantime. Here are a couple very 'arty' polaroids that were shot at Jodie's (from Lampost) party.

This is my girl Sandra. I think she is really beautiful. Last year she entered a hair competition for Candice Wyatt-minter from Wyatt hair salon and they did really well and travelled the world! This year they entered another competition and unfortunately didn't go through but it looked amazing. So, while her hair was still fairly freshly cut I decided to photograph her. I really love these, as I do her. This is the first of many a shoot of Sandra, so more to come.

Hope And Homes For Children

About a month ago, I was asked to go out to Hammanskraal to do a shoot for an Aids NGO based in the UK called Hope And Homes For Children. It was for their annual review and featured a few case studies of Aids Orphans in the Hammanskraal area. It was a very brief encounter, but I want to do a follow up story sometime soon. The group have set up an office and a few community centres that are basically geared toward looking after the children that have lost parents due to HIV/Aids. They are doing some really great work and I really loved the opportunity to work with them. It was the first time in a while I had done work of this nature and it was a great experience.

There are a few things that never see the light of day on my blog. Mostly because after waiting for it to be published, I simply forget. Other things I'm waiting to show the world, I don't know why yet, but I am. There are a couple of music projects i'd like to post but haven't yet because I'd like to do something with them. But these I will show.

There are a few portraits for Channel O magazine featuring DJ Sbu, Kelly Khumalo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Khanyi Mbau, Simphiwe Dana, DJ Waxxy, ProKid and Lira that i'll post soon. Then a couple of editorials for Cleo and FHM, Some portraits of Black Coffee for Mercedes Benz magazine and then a day filled with beer in a Catholic primary school hall for a gift for my friend Candice's boyfriend Michael. Been pretty hectic this month so I may post what I've been doing soon. But I'm really interested in starting a 'real' project.

I've been listening to a lot of Pearl Jam again lately. It takes me back a lot and puts things into perspective again. Been struggling to gain perspective lately. The world of commercial photography is not far removed from the sentiments of Eddie Vedder above. Having said that however, the challenges are vast and most of the time really interesting. I love what I do. Immensely. And this year calls for more personal endeavors within the genre. Got my hands on a Linhof 4 x 5 and it's beautiful. Gotta play!

Speaking of commercial photography, these were for a Cape Union Mart Christmas campaign. I shot it in and around Cape Town towards the end of last year and other than the wind, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

These two wonderful people are my grandparents. My grandmother is 93 and my grandfather is 94. They are incredible, I've spent most of my nearly 30 years getting to know them and they inspire me so much. Most of the sights, smells and fond memories as a child are thanks to them. They have been married for 70 years now and celebrated their Platinum Wedding Anniversary last year. I feel like a lucky man.

I recently shot a campaign for Sun Coast Casino in Durban, we shot plates at the casino and then some models in studio and one model on the beach in Cape Town. After being rained out the first day in Cape Town, we returned on a glorious day, which was rad for photography but really shit in terms of lugging gear and a generator through beach sand. By the end of the day Jason and I were broken men! But with the promise of beer and these last couple shots I took of Armanda, all ended well.

Slow Show

A while ago, 2 very cool Wits students approached me about doing a short documentary about me and my work. The idea they had was based on a French film 'Le Jetee' made up entirely of still black and white images. After a series of very chilled meetings and interview sessions they had what they needed. We had chatted about them accompanying me on a 'personal' shoot but due to the fact I had to leave for a while on a job, they came to the very next shoot I had booked. They still may accompany me on a job of a more personal nature to add to the documentary.

I think they did a great job and it was a super humbling experience for me. They even threw in 'Slow Show' by The National for good measure! so thanks to Samantha Nell and Mark Middlewick for making it easy and doing something rad. Here's a YouTube link if you wanna see it.

The last 2 months have been the craziest ride. The lyrics from Pearl Jam above ring true. At least I'm open and for now, I feel. More than ever. No trading magic for fact. I'm sure by now some of you would've seen the Model Millions or heard the stories. A huge fuck up in many respects, but in others the best experience of my life. I was lucky enough to work with some of the finest people one could hope to meet. So, for that, thank you. We managed to put together 2 full episodes and it is a huge pity that we couldn't do more together, as I have no doubt that we all could've done something special.

The rest i'm not gonna go into but ask me over a beer and i'll share!

War Post

K, so below is what I posted last night, I also posted some pics but i've just removed them because they're gonna be published in a super rad magazine in December, so for now i'm not gonna say anything about and wait till December to put them back! But thanks for the opportunity to publish them. Rad.

A long time a'comin. Been super crazy of late and amongst shooting, a back log of retouching, a day fishing, some portraits of my grandparents (who incidentally shared their 70th wedding anniversary the other day, crazy!), some planning for a new shoot which I'm really excited about, buying film and learning a new camera I have found some time to post this, which makes me happy!

These garments were inspired by the 1940's and recreated. One of the garments is a war time piece and the other 2 are part of 'New Look' just post war. I was asked to shoot these for a costume designer and with little time and no budget for a location shoot, I decided I opted for some film, a 4/5 camera, a Pentax 6/7 and shot studio portraits. I had watched the Annie Liebowitz documentary a few days prior to this shoot and my love and passion for photography was at a high, so decided to go back to the old school and 'make' pictures whilst shooting rather than 'take' pictures and 'make' them afterwards.

This process soothed my wounded soul and after stressing over whether or not I had got the focus right on f5.6 with the bellows tilted and shifted to the max, I got them processed and scanned and was presently surprised! The first three are the 4/5 shots and the other two were shot on the Pentax. They're very simple but I like them, maybe more because of the process, I don't know yet?

On another note. Summer, Fishing, Beer and a particle accelerator. Fuck Yeah.

I shot the new Converse campaign a while ago. The campaign is based on the international campaign using 'icons' strung together and joined by the feet. It was a really cool campaign to work on, one of the icons was Cassius Baloyi, we took this portrait on the day. It was also really cool meeting Jonty Rhodes, believe it or not, I'm the hugest cricket fan!

So, this is the first of a few. This was from the Cell C 'Book' campaign. It was on the back of the TV shoot, so I literally had about 5 minutes to knock these off. Sometimes it's rad just winging it with limited lighting. I wouldn't say these are particularly crafted but I quite like one or two of them.

13 For Life

Yesterday was a horrible day. Today is equally so. Our friend is gone. I'm frustrated and sad and confused. I wanted to read a book of his short stories, I wanted to ride my vespa next to his. I wanted to find out more about my new friend. All I know for sure is that he left his mark on all of those who cared for him and that I'm glad that I knew him. So for today, I wear my black Motorhead T-shirt and if he were here, he'd find that amusing! Take care man.

Migrate Magazine

Migrate Magazine was released last Friday. It's the Loeries annual magazine put together by Network. They did a really rad job. The cover was designed and illustrated by Johnny Kotze. Angie Batis, Joanne van der Linde and Johnny designed and layed it out and Graeme Jenner did copy. My brother (Jono) and I were asked to contribute whilst interpreting 'Make Your Mom Proud'. I did a series of portraits of people who you conventionally wouldn't associate with making their moms' proud, but in fact do. I photographed a tatooist, an illusionist and stilt walker, a cross dresser, an anarchist and a suicide girl. Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this, I really appreciate it. Here's what we came up with and a cool picture of our Mom.

JONATHAN GARRETT
Jonathan stems from the same vagina as Ross, but not at the same time, obviously. Yes, they are brothers, and they clearly share the same creative DNA because they are both clever visual little chaps. Jonathan also wanted to be a photographer but couldnt because he has no face (it was burnt off in a freak chip oil accident in '84) No, not really, I totally made that up. He is a portrait photographer who has been working out of his studio in town for the last 20 years or so. I'd like to go back there at some point to do some more stuff.

I was asked to come up for a concept for some portraits of the Terraplane directors. I thought an aftermath of a party could be quite interesting. I wanted to create an environment that looked like the morning after. Warm, sun drenched rooms and an atmosphere of remorse! Without being vile about it. David Hutt styled it and each director had input into their own environment. I even shot a self portrait! Well, kinda, Jason Meintjes shot it. One of the only shots I have of myself, depicted here as the photographer at the function, no friends, just a nice glass of bubbly and a rad camera!

I was fortunate enough to be asked to exhibit some work at the Nike Be True concept store in Melville. The launch was last night and there was some amazing work there. For my project, I wanted to do some portraits of Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe (The SA Womans Rugby Captain), the series of three images explores the 'taboo' of a black female in a traditionally white male (Afrikaner dominated) role. But taboo's in a broader sense as well. Nomsebenzi was amazing to work with and I really appreciate the opportunity to shoot this. Here they are.

Polaroid are planning to close down production on their legendary instant film, with the right support, hopefully another film manufacturer like Ilford or Fuji can take over production of this magical film. I saw Into The Wild (Sean Penn) the other day and since I did I can't help feeling like hitting the road. It's weird, everything I see makes me think of the movie! Today, I found a photographer by the name of Bryan Schutmaat and his work is amazing. Some of it reminds me of Alec Soth. There's something really pure about his stuff... Go check it out and watch the movie and listen to Pearl Jam, like hippies do.

Of Beasts & B-Grade

This is another advertising job I did for Mini. We had this really dodgy b-grade Tokyo made and got an old 'original' Godzilla brought in from overseas. It's comprised of two photographs, one of the set and everything in it and then the people were comped in afterwards. We made fire, set fire alarms off and got off our faces on smoke machine fragrances! It was to advertise the new Mini with brighter Xenon headlights. I think it won Ad of the month last November, it was a lot of fun. There are some other 'ad' jobs for Wrigleys, Loeries and First For Woman that I can post once they see the light of day (advertising etiquette i'm afraid!)

The Night Of 1000 Drawings time is upon us again and this year I wanted to do something different to last year as my contribution. I got to shoot a series of four studio portraits of a few of the refugees that stay at Paballo and help out with food and medication drop-offs for the inner city homeless. I wanted the portraits to be as simple and 'stripped-down' so to speak as possible. The four portraits will be on sale tonight to raise funds for Paballo and each guy I shot also got an edition. In order as they appear are; Bizwell Chembe (born 28 November 1961), Siphelele Manqindi (born 15 February 1983), Welcome Dlamini (born 15 September 1988) and Mduduzi Sibanda (born 18 April 1983)

I stumbled across a book by this guy when I was in Munich. There were a few other books I had my eye on in the store, but when I saw this guy's stuff, everything else went out the window and he became my new favourite. His use of cinematographic lighting and sets is remarkable. He's a genius! I also love his use of visual narrative and his scenes are almost like entire plots unfolding. He plays on paranormal scenes in surreal American environments. Inspired by the likes of William Eggleston, Walker Evans and Jeff Wall... I can't find an official site but here are a couple links and here, and if you can, get his book 'Gregory Crewdson 1985-2005'... It's amazing!

Hello. Last Saturday I shot a 'test' with a good friend of mine, Melody Kaye. She is a musician and model and stays down in Cape Town. So, whenever she's back we usually try and get together and this time we got to shoot together at last. I first shot Mel when she sang for the band Evenflow, but that was a long time ago. We didn't really have a plan for the shoot, I just wanted to try shoot in a different way to what I've been doing lately. So, the next few posts will be something new I suppose. Oh yeah, Melody is busy recording a new solo album down in Cape Town with a 'Swing/Big-Band' kinda feel, so listen out for it. K, bye.

Apathy scares me. A thick velvet curtain unveils an elaborate stage show with lights and explosions, dancers, horses (the ones that come from the circus) and thousands of pieces of back lit confetti. Stop-frame animations of origami creatures appear behind the madness. Balanced high upon a stack of speakers I view this world through my viewfinder.

On Friday last week I was fortunate enough to shoot Alexander Koutny's new range 'Les Plis Du Temp' (Temporal Folds). The theme for the range was 'speed', he uses the metaphor of people moving through space and time as the inherent concept for the range. See and read more here. He was out in South Africa for SA Fashion Week. The shoot was a lot of fun and great to work with the people that I did. These are the first couple shots that I've worked on, I'll probably be posting some more in the future.

Tlokwe Sehume

A while ago I did a shoot of a Traditional healers' band out in Mpumulanga and it was through this man, Tlokwe Sehume. Tlokwe is one of those people who fills the room with his personality and his vision. Tlokwe promotes Indigenous music in the country through his company Medu Promotions. He also conducts workshops in rural communities teaching children about Indigenous music and the craft involved in making the instruments. Read more here. This shoot was for his 4th studio album. We shot at his bands' (Medu) rehearsal space at The Pretoria State Theatre.
